The smell of espresso wafted out of Kilo D’Cofi on the corner of SW Sixth Ave. and Pine Street while we did cherry pickers, butt kickers and lunges. The 7 p.m. sun glinted off the windows of Big Pink, and Burnside’s evening traffic was at a low hum.

Screaming. That’s mostly what I remember. Screaming and bright lights. A hospital hallway and the harsh smell of disinfectant. A birthing mother screaming so loud it shreds eardrums.

I’ve been disabled throughout my entire time at UP, but it wasn’t until this semester that I became a full-time wheelchair user. Most students get around our small campus easily, a max 10-minute walk from one class to another. It’s normal not to think about accessibility, especially when visibly disabled people make up such a small minority of our campus. While the app is useful for everyday tasks, finding important campus safety resources can take multiple clicks, making it harder to use in emergencies.
