On Friday, Nov. 5, University of Portland students, faculty and admin welcomed Lindsay Romasanta as the keynote speaker to kick off National First Generation celebration week. This is the fifth year UP will celebrate and recognize first-generation students, faculty and staff.

This week in Pilots Athletics, men’s and women’s basketball both won their season openers, the women’s soccer team finished out their regular season play with a loss and a win, men’s soccer also picked up a win and a loss, women’s indoor volleyball lost both of their games, women’s tennis competed in the Gonzaga Invitational and women’s rowing competed in the Head of the Lake Regatta.

In July of this year, the entire world watched as the Norwegian National women’s beach handball team was fined for a uniform violation. The team showed up to their match against Spain in thigh-length elastic shorts instead of the regulation bikini bottoms, and in response, the European Handball Association’s Disciplinary Commission delivered a $1,700 fine. But fans watching globally knew that the fine meant more than a couple thousand dollars — it was a message to female athletes worldwide.

Over Fall Break, University of Portland’s non-faculty employees were given one paid day off, a “Pilots’ Staff Appreciation Day.” At the end of September, the University also paid a $1000 “Pilots’ Staff Appreciation Bonus” to staff who make less than $75,000 a year.

The Pilots returned to Chiles to take on the Pepperdine Waves on Saturday, Oct. 23. Decked out in pink accessories for breast cancer awareness, the team’s energy and strength was palpable, and the fans reflected that passion.
