From the loss of $13.4 million to the gain of the new Diversity Center, the University of Portland has seen a lot of changes in the past year. What does 2023 hold for UP? Here are predictions from The Beacon staff:
The year is 1979. Moe O’Connor and her husband, Russ, have been living in the Pacific Northwest for just over a year, having moved there after Russ got a job working for Intel. She had grown up an athlete, having played tennis primarily and doing so in college at Bradley University. It wasn’t a unique thing to her. Back in Chicago, her hometown, it was just expected that women competed in sports back in the day, at least at her high school.

When I was younger, I remember briefly watching "Project Runway." I never thought about the blood, sweat and tears that come with perfecting a model’s look backstage. Little did I know I’d be working as a backstage dresser at the 2022 FashioNXT Runway Show for the designer Seth Aaron — winner of “Project Runway” season seven and “Project Runway” all stars season three.
One of the reasons I came to the University of Portland was because of its storied soccer history. Megan Rapinoe, the NCAA championship-winning teams and so much more. But I didn’t realize that I would come to appreciate another famous UP alum: Christine Sinclair.
While UP students all took winter break to relax, Pilot athletes worked hard, competing in basketball games, track and field meets and tennis kicking off. The men’s soccer team had a few players sign onto pro teams. George Tasouris is on trial with LA Galaxy’s first team, Benji Michel has signed with Portuguese club FC Arouca, Delentz Pierre signed with Real Salt Lake and both Gurman Sangha and Brandon Cambridge signed for Charlotte FC.

The world is lying to you.
Paris, France makes for a beautifully romanticized vacation. You can walk along the Seine, take pictures in front of the Eiffel Tower and visit the Louvre. Or, if you are junior Chivon Ou, who uses she/they pronouns, you can present on biomedical research.
Unless you’re living under a rock, you’ve most likely heard of the Pokémon franchise. Since 1996, Pokémon has made a permanent mark on pop culture and the lives of people worldwide. Selling 10 million copies in three days after release, “Pokémon Scarlet and Violet,” — the franchise’s most recent games for the Nintendo Switch — prove that the series isn’t going anywhere.
This won’t have much of a point until I explain it at the end, so bear with me for a few minutes while I meander through a brief summary of my life story, the important bits anyways.
The administration has eliminated the Title IX coordinator position in an effort to deal with the University’s $13.4 million budget deficit. Over the summer Ethan Snyder was hired as Title IX coordinator, but has recently left UP.

The Portland Pilots Men’s soccer team was dealt a tough blow as they lost in double overtime to the University of Pittsburgh on Saturday, Dec. 3. This loss marked their final of the season as they are now out of the NCAA tournament.
The University of Portland is tightening its belt financially due to a significant loss of revenue following the “freshman melt” that occurred over the summer. With 66% of the University’s revenue coming from tuition, this melt caused an additional negative of $8.9 million, contributing to a total budget loss of $13.4 million.
