Tucked away in St. Mary’s Student Center, the Moreau Center is the University of Portland’s arm reaching out to the Portland community. Hosting a myriad of community service events and immersion programs, the Moreau Center embodies the Catholic ideals of service and growth. The image of UP — an institution dedicated to cultivating people “who better the world” — is demonstrated at the Moreau Center.

In the past year, the University of Portland has had its ups and downs in creating a safe and welcoming space for LGBTQ+ students on campus. I have had the privilege this year of serving on the President’s DEIJ working group along with administrators, students and staff to improve the queer experience on campus.

Walking into the Beauchamp Recreation Center can be a little bit overwhelming. After scanning your ID you're immediately subjected to four different activities: the rock wall, the weight and machine room, the basketball courts and an open area welcome for stretching or more core workouts. However, this was all intentional.

Despite not being able to stream on the air, KDUP has made its presence known on campus. Whether it’s through their social media presence, their fall concert “Bash the Bluff”, open mic nights, or in this case, their annual concert Smash the Bluff (STB), the student-run organization is excited to share more of Portland’s iconic music culture.

I have been doing theater ever since I was in first grade. I still remember my three lines from my first play, “Charlotte’s Web,” and will recite them at the drop of a hat. When little me stepped onstage to face an audience full of parents and their cameras and was hit by the bright stage light, I knew that I wanted to do this for the rest of my life.

The Associated Students of the University of Portland (ASUP) has decided to pull $375,000 out of the quasi endowment fund to donate to the new Welcome and Engagement Center that is a part of the 2027 strategic plan. The donation will be given in increments: $125,000 a year for the next three years.

Ari Shapiro, rotating host of NPR’s “All Things Considered”, will be this year’s commencement speaker for the class of ‘23. Shapiro, along with U.S. Senator in Vermont 1975-2023, Patrick J. Leahy, will be two out of the seven to receive honorary doctorates.

The Mapuche Speaking Tour paid University of Portland a visit for a screening of a documentary by filmmaker Kelly Baur and a discussion on the Mapuche land reclamation and language revitalization movements on March 22. Mapuche activists Carolina Kürrüf Poblete and Silvia Calfuqueo Leifo were in attendance. The event was hosted by the Womxn of Color Club, the Social Justice minor program and the Ethnic Studies program.

Attending a Catholic university like UP can be scary for students who belong to the LGBTQ+ community. Oftentimes facing higher rates of discrimination from students and school policies, it is understandable why prospective queer students would want to attend a school with an inclusive and supportive community.
