When Ari Shapiro first applied for an internship at NPR, he was rejected. Rather than dwelling in his sorrows, he looked for other avenues and found a new opportunity through Nina Totenberg at NPR, who hires her own interns. Little did he know, this would spark his 20-year-long career with NPR and lead him to more opportunities than he could have ever imagined.

I think maps are some of the coolest things ever. They can contain so much information in so little space. Not only are they useful for finding where you are or where different landmarks may be, but some maps are also just pleasing to look at.

Above a door in the back of St. Mary’s lies a sign that reads “The Beacon.” Every year — semester even — a different set of student journalists walks in and out of that room, working to provide fair and accurate stories to the University of Portland community. Leading these reporters is the editorial board: a team of nine student journalists overseeing various aspects of The Beacon from content creation to team management and mentorship.. As the school year comes to an end, the 2022-23 editorial board passes on the torch to next year’s editors, excited to see what they bring to the Student Voice of the University of Portland.

In July 2016, the world became obsessed with Pokémon GO. People worldwide were scrambling to odd corners to catch their favorite monster on their mobile phone — some going as far as trespassing onto private property or risking their lives. Then-presidential candidate Hillary Clinton even infamously said “Pokémon GO to the polls” during a campaign rally.

The season of graduation brings about both tears and cheers. As graduating seniors take their next steps into life, many of them will be adorned in cords of many colors. This colorful parade may beg the question, what do these graduation vestments mean? Although the program key can be helpful, some may be wondering more about what the graduates had to do to earn these cords.

If you have been lucky enough to play or watch football on the beautiful grass of Merlo Field, you may have seen the ball skip off the soft, bright green surface of the pitch from a pass. Maybe you have slid or watched a player slide on the freshly mowed grass creating marks and divots and yet the next day the field returns to a perfectly smooth, untouched pitch. Or maybe you’ve walked by as the ground staff mows the field and wondered about what their job entails.

“A deep chesty bawl echoes from rimrock to rimrock, rolls down the mountain, and fades into the far blackness of the night. It is an outburst of wild defiant sorrow, and of contempt for all the adversities of the world. Every living thing (and perhaps many a dead one as well) pays heed to that call. To the deer it is a reminder of the way of all flesh, to the pine a forecast of midnight scuffles and of blood upon the snow, to the coyote a promise of gleanings to come, to the cowman a threat of red ink at the bank, to the hunter a challenge of fang against bullet. Yet behind these obvious and immediate hopes and fears there lies a deeper meaning, known only to the mountain itself. Only the mountain has lived long enough to listen objectively to the howl of a wolf.”

For many first-year students, the trials and tribulations of finding friends on campus can be a long process and is an integral part of the college experience. Cultural clubs, classes or intramural sports are just some of the ways students go about seeking these new connections but for one group of students at UP, one thing has unified them more than any of these: their faith.

However, after the sacking of their longtime manager Arsene Wenger in the summer of 2018, the club struggled to perform at a high level, finishing outside of the top four in the Premier League for the last six seasons.

A packed library and the raided shelves at Mack’s Market can only mean one thing — dead week has arrived. Between working on final exams, setting up last-minute meetings with professors and finding the right time to scarf down a quick meal, move-out plans can be the last thing on anyone’s mind.

Commencement is quickly approaching — whether or not graduating seniors want to think about it. This past October, seniors applied to graduate and in March ordered their cap and gown and tickets. While this point in the semester may feel like a rush of getting projects and papers wrapped up, it can be easy to forget about the smaller graduation details.

The lights in Mago Hunt dim and the sound of boots hitting the stage ushers us into the world of Shakespeare. Though the scenery is bright and floral, the opening scene is dreary and sad. For the next two hours and 10 minutes, the cast of “Twelfth Night” provides some laughs, tears and comedic relief.
