On game nights at Merlo Field, the vibrancy of Portland Pilot pride is unmistakable. Students draped in vivid purple flood the stands while the ear-deafening beats of the drum squad echo through the air, their impassioned cheers punctuated by the unmistakable swirl of celebratory purple smoke through the evening sky.

Imagine the Chiles Center. The great white dome sits at the edge of campus. Home to many University of Portland sporting events, Rock the Bluff, graduation and even a Dalai Lama speech in 2013 — the Chiles Center is a place that has seen trials and triumphs, success and loss and holds a million memories. There are two people who have been there for it all: Dan Seabeck and Eli Wingfield, the unspoken heroes of Chiles.

When Kieurstyn Camacho first applied to UP, she felt eager to find a community of people from Guam in Portland. She remembers being at a UP-hosted reception back home, getting to hear the president of the Guam Club talk about the large community that supported one another. However, that excitement was cut short once she stepped foot onto campus.

There’s something familiar about the North Portland band, Saint Rémy. Maybe you’ve already been to one of their shows or even know some of their members from the University of Portland. However, the band’s latest release, “Montgomery Park,” brings something entirely new to the table for their listeners: punk.

No one has put the University of Portland on the map quite like Megan Rapinoe. A professional soccer player for OL Reign FC and the United States Women’s National Team, advocate for equal pay for female players, winner of the Ballon d’Or Féminin and The Best FIFA Women’s Player of 2019 and overall one of the most accomplished athletes in the world — Rapinoe is revered in Portland as few are.

The inside of books, magazines, newspapers, loose leaf papers, sticky notes, notebooks, diaries — they all serve as canvases for the writing my body allows me to produce. The hunger I have for writing is satiated only when my words and thoughts are able to be released by the cathartic nature of paper to pen. Writing for me is something intrinsic that begs to be answered.

Welcome, new and returning Pilots! My name is Kayako Olson, but most people call me Kaya. I am the new Associated Students of the University of Portland (ASUP) President and I am so excited to serve you this year. Every fall when I come back, the energy on campus gets more and more exciting as I notice the new traditions that have evolved since I first arrived, and how strong clubs and student organizations have become throughout the past three years.
