To celebrate Día de los Muertos, DIP along with several clubs, departments and offices on campus created an ofrenda exhibit that honored the lives of those loved ones. The ofrendas honored those who have passed such as victims of anti-Semitism and members of the LGBTQ community who were victims of hate crimes. Students had the opportunity to make crafts that honored their loved ones and offer them to an ofrenda.

On Friday September 23, Dr. Robert Kelly was inaugurated as the 21st president of The University of Portland. Kelly is UP’s first African American and lay president, making this inauguration historic for the university. Students, friends, family, UP faculty, and members of the community came together to celebrate the momentous inauguration.

Kicking off the new school year, UP’s Campus Program Board hosted Riverboat 2022 on the Shipstad field. The event’s theme this year was Coachella, inspiring creative outfits and desert themed decorations. Students enjoyed fair rides, fun treats, pictures with alpacas, and lots of dancing of course.

To wrap up the last week before classes, the University of Portland’s men’s soccer team played a home game against Central Arkansas. UP students, community members, and parents gathered at the Merlo Field on August 26th to watch the game, cheering on the Pilots in their fight against the Bears.
The game ended in a 2-2 tie after an exciting second half and admirable comeback for the Portland Pilots.
The men’s soccer team will play another home game this Friday, September 2nd against Cal Poly.
