Will you finish reading this article? If you don’t, we don’t blame you. College students are stretched thin. We’re juggling class, homework, papers, tests, jobs, internships, friends, relationships, chores, budgeting…
As if it weren’t enough, students are also navigating adulthood. We are deciding who we want to be, what we want to do and where we will go.
But now, there are new players bidding for our attention.
Our focus is currency, and tech and social media companies are mining it, funneling news, advertisements and endless streams of content into brains that were never meant to handle this much information.
Seconds is all we have to keep your attention. So how much is left for what matters?
Today is Student Press Freedom Day, a time to recognize the critical role of student press. This year's theme, “At the ForeFront,” reminds us of what matters at UP. From student government to university policy, these issues shouldn’t take the backseat.
As an independent, student-led newspaper, our mission is to amplify the stories and voices of students. We cover stories that directly impact you. We cover national news, local news and everything in between, but our mission remains the same.
We can’t control everything, but we can make your voices heard on campus. Your stories are the most powerful tool for change.
The Beacon staff is comprised of just 19 out of 3,285 students. Like yours, our attention is also stretched every which way. We can’t cover everything by ourselves; we need you. Tell us what we don’t know. Tell us what you think needs to be changed.
We will be tabling in front of Clark Library from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. This is your chance to build a relationship with your student press. This is your chance to take back your attention and put it towards what matters.
…So, did you make it to the end?
Have something to say about this? We’re dedicated to publishing a wide variety of viewpoints, and we’d like to hear from you. Voice your opinion in The Beacon.
