Swap out your Pilot purple for Barbie pink this weekend at Pilots After Dark and ASUP Films’ free screening of “Barbie.” Barbie and Ken will grace Shipstad field this Saturday, Aug. 31 at 9 p.m..

ASUP Films will also provide food such as catered pastries, candy and refreshment drinks and will conclude with guest speaker Associated Students of the University of Portland (ASUP) Vice President Stephanie Vasquez, who oversees ASUP Films.

ASUP Films Director Franky Sotelo is looking forward to how “Barbie” can positively impact a large audience.

“[‘Barbie’] is very comedic and Ken is awesome,” Sotelo said. “He’s really funny throughout the film. We chose this film [because] we felt like it can hit everyone, and everyone can show up and find a redeeming quality or something enjoyable about [the movie].”

The movie is just one of many annual, outdoor screenings hosted by both ASUP Films and Pilots After Dark.

For the upcoming school year, Sotelo’s goals include maintaining monthly screenings and increasing collaborations.

“We really want to lean into collaborations this year,” Sotelo said. “I would really like to get more guest speakers. [...] We’re trying not to just be, ‘oh, we’re showing a movie,’ rather make it an event, whether that be getting a guest speaker [...] or highlighting a club [...] and tying it with the film.”
