Students Against Sexual Assault (SASA), is coming out with its own magazine this semester, the Survivor Zine Magazine. It will showcase personal accounts of sexual assault from students on the Bluff through stories, poems and art pieces.
“It's a way to voice their voices and have it be anonymous,” Brooke Welter, co-president of SASA, said.
SASA’s goal is to provide a safe space for survivors of sexual assault and to make campus a safer place for everyone. The idea for the magazine came from wanting survivors at UP to feel like there is a place for them to share their stories, especially at such a small school.
“It’s your own voice but through visual art — and I think that’s really nice for people that maybe can’t find the words for what happened to them,” Isabella Hull, co-president of SASA, said.
With the introduction of the magazine, UP students can speak out knowing what they say won’t come back to them, especially if the perpetrator also attends the same school.
“We wanted to do something bigger to advocate for the survivors amongst the student body,” Miriam Hatil, SASA’s social media coordinator, said.
The deadline to submit a piece for the magazine is Dec. 8, leaving time for the club to come together and assemble the magazine over winter break. They plan to have physical copies to hand out on campus when they are ready.
In the meantime, SASA will have their yearly Fall Week of Action after fall break, where they will have events every day of that week, such as pumpkin painting, watching scenes of the Barbie movie, a What We Wore clothing display and more.
