In UP athletics since Sept. 24 the men’s tennis team competed in the PNW invitational and the women’s tennis teams competed in the Gonzaga invitational. Women’s soccer took on Utah Valley and Men’s soccer took on Utah tech, both remaining undefeated. Volleyball took on Pacific University and Loyola Marymount.
Men’s tennis
The men’s tennis team competed in day 2 of the George Fox University PNW invitational on Sept. 24. They traveled to Newberg, OR where freshmen Cade Fernando and Fabian Gusic made their collegiate debuts.
They compete at the ITA All-American Championships Qualifiers on Oct. 3
Women’s tennis
The women’s tennis team competed at the Gonzaga invitational on Sept. 24. Freshmen Alaia Rubio Perez and Meagan Pearson each picked up singles wins as did junior Rose Watanabe.
They next compete at the ITA All-American Championships Qualifiers on Oct. 1
Women’s soccer
The women’s soccer team played Utah Valley at home on Sept. 24 where they won 2-1. The goals came from senior MJ Roe and sophomore Elianna Wong.
With this win, the Pilots maintained their unbeaten streak and they now sit at 18th in the United Soccer Coaches Top 25 poll. It is their highest ranking since 2014. Additionally, combined with the men’s soccer team UP is the only school in the nation where both its men’s and women’s soccer teams are undefeated.
They next play Loyola Marymount at home on Oct. 1. This game marks the first league game of the season.
Men’s soccer
The Pilots took on Utah Valley at home on Sept. 25. It was a blowout match with UP winning 6-0. The goals came from freshman Muslim Umar, sophomore Sebastian Nava, and senior CJ Tibbling. Tibbling scored 4 of the 6 goals while Umar and Nava had a goal each. Tibbling's four goals are the most scored by a Pilot in a single game since Connor Casey had five in 1999. He is one of six Pilots to score four goals in a game.
With this win, the men’s team remains undefeated and are now ranked ninth in the United Soccer Coaches Top 25 poll.
They next play Saint Mary’s at home on Sept. 30, this game is the beginning of league play for the Pilots.
Volleyball
On Sept. 24 the Pilots took on Pacific University at home. They won 3-2 with junior Jayde Harris tallying the most kills followed by freshman Maui Robins.
Then on Sept. 27 they took on Loyola Marymount in Los Angeles, CA. There they fell 0-3, Harris and Robins again tallied the most kills.
Finally, on Sept. 29 Portland lost to nationally ranked BYU at home. They lost 0-3 to the team that currently sits 15th. Harris yet again led the team in kills and was followed by freshman Lucia Busso.
The Pilots next play San Diego at home on Oct. 1.
