Women’s basketball head coach Cheryl Sorenson will not return as coach of the Portland Pilots next season. The University of Portland announced the news Tuesday via press release. The university stated that the search for a new head coach will begin immediately.
Sorenson had just completed her fifth season as coach of the Pilots, finishing with an overall record of 13-17 and a conference record of 5-13. Portland finished eighth in the conference and lost in the first round of the WCC tournament to the University of San Francisco 76-69.
"I would like to thank Coach Sorenson for her service and dedication during her time here at Portland," Vice President for Athletics Scott Leykam said in the press release. "Cheryl represented the department and the University with professionalism and positively shaped the lives of many student-athletes."
Sorenson had a career record of 33-117 during her tenure in Portland. This past season was her most successful with the Pilots in five years, an improvement over the 7-23 season last year and the 4-26 record her first year at the helm.
