In the first game of this weekends’ series in Portland, the Pilots were defeated by the University of San Francisco 4-6.
The game started out as cold as the weather, with no scoring in the first two innings. But things started to heat up in the third inning when San Francisco's Riley Helland sliced a ball into left field, allowing two runners to slide home.
The game remained in stalemate for another two innings until UP began to fight back in the sixth, with sophomore Beau Brundage scoring a run. However, the Pilots gave up four runs in the next two innings and could not dig themselves out of that hole, despite a late run in the ninth inning. A magic moment of the match occurred in the top of the fifth inning, when Portland junior Daniel Lopez caught a line drive toward third with a backhanded catch and then threw across the field to first base to get the runner out. Despite this fantastic effort and nine strikeouts from Freshman Eli Morse, the Pilots were unable to overcome the undefeated Dons.
