The Department of Public Safety Annual Crime & Fire Report for 2016 was released Friday in an email to the University of Portland community from Director of Public Safety, Gerald Gregg. The reported number of crimes that took place on university property in 2016 are generally consistent with crime and fire report statistics from 2014 and 2015. The most notable change is a spike in disciplinary referrals for liquor law violations from 116 on campus in 2015, to 323 on campus in 2016.
Despite increased conversation about sexual assault on campus, reported sexual assault statistics remain consistent. There were three rape instances recorded on-campus in 2016, which is the same number of rapes recorded on campus in 2015 and 2014.
This report is published annually in accordance with federal regulations. The crimes accounted for in the report include crimes reported on campus property, in university owned houses and in university buildings off-campus.
The report includes reported crime statistics on rape, burglary, assault, theft, liquor law violations, drug law violations and others.
Notable statistics in the 2016 report include a recorded seven instances of on-campus burglary, two instances of on-campus motor vehicle theft, 19 on-campus disciplinary referrals for drug law, one on-campus aggravated assault and one disciplinary referral for weapon policy.
