Students Against Sexual Assault (SASA), the Health and Counseling Center and a variety of other campus organizations will host a Take Back the Night event this evening.

Take Back the Night began in the 1970s as a protest against sexual violence and is typically a march or a protest.

The University of Portland’s version of the event will have a slightly different look. It is being held in the chapel, and will be a quiet opportunity for people to share their experiences with sexual assault. Organizers said they chose that venue so that people will feel comfortable sharing their stories, because even mandatory reporters of sexual assault are not allowed to report it if someone speaks candidly about their experience in the chapel.

After a few speakers introduce the event, attendees will be invited to share their stories of being affected by sexual or interpersonal violence. SASA President Abby Sherman explained the evening will be “emotionally charged,” and there will be moments of silence to allow time for reflection.

Sherman encourages students to attend to send a message that sexual violence won’t be tolerated on this campus.

“Come, share your story, or just show support. You don’t have to speak out. Representation in numbers sends a beautiful message as well,” Sherman said.

Take Back the Night will be at 7 p.m. on April 6 in the Chapel of Christ the Teacher.
