Senior midfielder Allison Wetherington, senior defender Ellie Boon and freshman forward Kimberly Hazlett — all on the women’s soccer team — have received All-West Coast Conference honors.

Wetherington is no stranger to earning such honors. This is her second time on the WCC First Team, the other being her sophomore year. During her freshman year and junior year, Wetherington was voted to the All-Conference Second Teams and won the Freshman of the Year Award in 2013.

“It was nice this year because last year I was voted onto the Second Team. But I could not have done this without my teammates,” Wetherington said.

Wetherington led the Pilots this season with five assists. She also recorded four goals this season, two of which came in the same game against city rivals Portland State on Aug. 26.

Boon was voted to the All-Conference Second Team for the second time in her UP career for the second year in a row as a senior. She was also named All-WCC Honorable Mention in her first two seasons as a Pilot.

“Being voted onto this team was an absolute honor. It’s nice to be recognized for my stats and play this year,” Boon said. “The team has come a long way and it’s nice to see people getting recognized for their play.”

2016 Pilots captain Boon led the team in minutes played this year, which is something that she is very proud of.

“You never know how much you’re going to play because of the risk of injuries so I was blessed with an injury-free season, which is step one to playing time. The goal of everyone on the team is to be on the field,” Boon said. “The opportunity to play that much and be on the field is awesome. It’s been a goal of mine to play as much as I can, and I achieved that goal.”

Along with leading the team in minutes, Boon had two assists and one goal, a game winner, against the University of San Francisco on Oct. 28.

Hazlett, who joined the University of Portland in August, has been voted to the WCC All-Freshman Team.

“Getting this honor was definitely a surprise for me, but I’m very thankful and appreciative to be recognized,” Hazlett said.

Hazlett brought the energy that her teammates have come to associate with her to The Bluff this year in her first year as a Pilot. She appeared in all 19 games this year, starting in 15 of those games. She scored two goals and added one assist to her stat line.

While Wetherington and Boon have now finished their last year of soccer as Pilots, Hazlett is just getting started and is excited for the future of this team and the University of Portland.

Wetherington and Boon are now preparing themselves for their futures in soccer. Both are entering the draft to become professional soccer players and represent the University of Portland either in the states or abroad.
