Though the clang of construction will continue and the grass out front will be only temporary, 167 students will move into Lund Family Hall, University of Portland’s newest residence hall, starting Aug. 23.

The hall’s B-wing, which is located on Willamette Blvd., will be ready for early move-in Tuesday. Of the students moving in, 120 will be permanent B-wing residents and 47 will be temporary A-wing residents staying in “extending living” rooms in B-wing. The 60 other displaced A-wing students will either be housed in Fields and Schoenfeldt Halls or will opt to stay off-campus with a pro-rated discount to their housing costs.

The A-wing is expected to be complete and ready for move-in by the end of Fall Break, according to Assistant Director of Housing Sarah Meiser. A temporary wall will be built between the two sections of the building so students will not have access to the construction area, where flooring and finishing the building’s exterior are among the tasks still to be completed.

The Office of Residence Life first notified students of the planned two-phase opening last spring. But despite the setback, Meiser said the office looks forward to moving students into the new hall.

“Now that it has a name, it has a benefactor, Mike Wode has created a logo … We’re all really excited,” Meiser said. “Everyone on campus is working to make this a fantastic move-in.”

Veteran hall director Mike Wode will be moving from Corrado Hall to lead the new dorm. A new face to The Bluff, Allison Quinn, who attended UP’s sister school University of Notre Dame, will be the new hall director for Corrado.

Meiser said Wode has come up with a name for the new hall community: “The Wolfpack”. The dorm’s main lounge area will be called “The Den” and Residence Life has already designed T-shirts in the new dorm’s colors - yellow and gray.

“The Lund Family Hall logo has a wolf howling at the moon for 'The Wolfpack,’” Meiser said. “It’s got a really strong sense of togetherness.”

Additionally, Meiser said the rumored new campus eatery on the first floor of the new hall is being built, though it likely won’t be ready for service this semester.
