Students showcased the sights, sounds and smells of 15 countries at International Night last Friday. The event concluded Diversity Dialogues Week, a week dedicated to showcasing various cultures and perspectives through a series of student-coordinated workshops, lectures, discussions and film screenings.

The event was hosted by International Student Services in conjunction with ASUP and the International Club. International Education Week coordinator and international student Linh Tran, a senior global business major from Vietnam, began coordinating International Night last semester by recruiting students to represent their respective countries at informational booths and finding entertainment for the showcase of nations.

Tran said she was happy with how the event played out this year.

“For this event the whole time a lot of people came and interacted with each other at the showcase of nations,” Tran said. “There were lots of activities during the showcase of nations that helped increase participation.”

Activities included live performances by the Inan brothers, senior Nihat Inan and '13 alumnus Baris Inan who performed Turkish music, a martial arts performance, a traditional Guamanian song by the Guam club, two professional musicians, a fashion show that showcased the traditional dress of each country and a photo booth.

Bon Appetit served special appetizer-sized food samplers and drinks for the event, which included tastes from a variety of nations.

“The food was authentic and they did a great job with smaller portions and cheaper prices,” Tran said.

Junior elementary education major Chelsea Baclaan showcased the Philippines along with other members of the Filipino Student Association by displaying a colorful informational poster and traditional Filipino candies at her booth. She said she was surprised by the number of people who ended up coming to the booths.
