The girl behind me was throwing up and the boy ahead of me was tripping out, but I was in my happy place. Standing in line at the Roseland Theater with the other concert-goers, nothing - not even the sound of vomit hitting the pavement - could damper my mood.
The night brought New Zealand production duo Truth, Los Angeles based DJ Etc. Etc. and Canadian DJ and producer Datsik to the stage. Each minute melted into the next as Truth, then Etc. Etc. and finally Datsik played their sets. Time became irrelevant as a magnetic force of sorts held me to my spot on the dance floor.
Among a sea of sparkly bras and silver spandex, I got absorbed into the crowd’s energy, the beat of the music crashing into me like a wave, my body bracing for the next swell. It was one big dance party and I loved every second of it.
Four hours, three DJ’s, two tired legs and one concert later, I left Roseland with ears ringing, body shaking and heart racing.
I’ve always liked EDM music, but Saturday night’s show made me love it. You probably won’t find me explaining the difference between Deep House, Raw Style or Progressive House any time soon. Nor will I be hot-gluing sequins to my bra or buying a value pack of brightly colored beaded bracelets. But I’d definitely see any of these DJ’s again without another thought.
A day later and my ears are still ringing. Worth it? I’d say so.
