The women’s soccer team played the University of Washington Huskies in an intense, high-scoring game on Merlo Field this weekend.

The Pilots started strong and scored the first goal of the game in the 24th minute.

The play was set up by sophomore Ellie Boon and senior Rebekah Kurle at the edge of the 18-yard box. Boon sent the ball towards sophomore Allison Wetherington, who took a touch before slotting the ball into the back of the net.

The 1-0 lead lasted only three minutes, though, after the Huskies were awarded a penalty kick after a collision in the goal box. UW Senior Kate Bennett took the penalty kick and scored, evening out the score at 1-1.

In the 38th minute, Bennett showed up again, scoring from 25 yards out to give the Huskies a 2-1 lead before halftime.

The Pilots came back with renewed energy and scored a goal three minutes into the second half. Sophomore Danica Evans earned her second assist of the season when she passed the ball to sophomore Parkes Kendrick, who sent the ball in and scored when it glanced off of Washington’s junior goalkeeper Megan Kufeld.

The Pilots controlled the game to keep the score at 2-2 until the Huskies capitalized off of a corner kick by Bennett. Sophomore Amanda Perez headed in the ball off of Bennett’s lofted corner to take a 3-2 lead for Washington.

The Pilots could not find the back of the net again, and the game ended with the Huskies 3-2 lead.
